Background

Maurece knew that she wanted to practice law from a young age. She graduated from Queen’s University Belfast in 1994 with a 2.1 LLB honours degree and qualified as a solicitor in 1996. Since qualifying almost 30 years ago she has taken a specific interest in personal injury cases, which she found hugely rewarding as she was able to make a meaningful difference to clients lives, often who had suffered life changing injuries through no fault of their own, after being involved in traumatic events.

Leadership of the Firm

Maurece is committed to ensuring the vision of JMK is achieved so that we are the only solicitors that people think of if they need help following an injury on an accident. Maurece believes that making both clients and all her colleagues in JMK her priority is how this will be achieved. JMK have, under her leadership, retained the top position for a personal injury firm in Northern Ireland for over a decade.

Acting with integrity and to the highest professional standards are critical to achieving the best outcome for clients.

Maurece served as the Managing Director for JMK for well over a decade before passing the baton on. She remains dedicated to supporting the Board of Directors carry forward the vision and values and to be there for our many clients both current and in the future who need our help and to ensure we achieve the best outcome for them.

Advocacy and Thought Leadership

Maurece is committed to protecting the rights of innocent victims to access justice and compensation after suffering injuries and has been a consultee to many key consultations relevant to personal injury law. Notably she contributed to Lord Justice Gillen’s Review of Civil and Family Justice specifically on the issue of protecting children’s compensation claims. As a result of which a recommendation was made to bring forward legislation to ensure children are protected in the future. Maurece has lobbied for this outcome for many years (Activist Lawyer – In Conversation with Maurece Hutchinson).

Maurece continues to contribute from the victims perspective as a member of the shadow Civil Justice Advisory Group, which was established to assist bringing forward the recommendations from Sir John Gillen’s review.

Maurece has been a member of the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers (APIL) for nearly 30 years and was the Joint Regional Co-ordinator for APIL between 2016 and 2022. She is an Emeritus Fellow with APIL, having previously held Fellow status which is independent recognition of her standing in the field of personal injury claims. She continues to contribute to key consultations through APIL which are impacting the rights of people in Northern Ireland.

Four Day Week

Maurece believes in creating a working environment which values the whole JMK team. She is an advocate for the “Four Day Week” and was part of implementing this in JMK in January 2020.

Maurece has assisted in the four-day week global campaign and is a mentor to the Irish Pilot scheme and has spoken about the work-life balance and benefits of this, to many businesses, charities and media outlets. Most recently she spoke at the Legal Futures PI Futures conference in Manchester, having previously featured in their publication.
